You can see CAD/Drafting at work in architecture, electronics, aeronautics, product design, maps, oil refineries, jewelry, and many other areas. While this creates numerous job opportunities, you will find that employers prefer to hire people with a formal training in CAD/Drafting, so you should be considering the degrees and courses that many schools and colleges offer.There were around 254,000 drafters employed in 2004, with architectural, mechanical, and civil drafters accounting for 75% of the jobs. Growth in CAD/Drafting jobs through year 2014 will be lower than the average for all jobs, but there will still be a strong outlook for graduates of CAD/Drafting schools programs. Education is the key to success in CAD/Drafting. Employers now require drafters who can handle more sophisticated CAD systems, and undertake some work previously done by, for example, engineers or architects. Increasingly complex industrial design will also enhance the opportunities for fully-trained CAD/Drafting specialists. You should aim for at least a 2-year program which will focus on technical skills and provide plenty of CAD experience.
